I would like to welcome all sailors to Sail Banda 2010, this unique and multi faceted event is to be staged in the heart of Indonesia in the splendid location of the the Banda Islands, which have a rich and important history. These islands are one of the most beautiful, unspoiled and historical parts of Indonesia comprised of a tiny string of 10 picture perfect islands in crystal clear seas and they are blessed with some of the finest diving in the country if not the world.
I hope you can join with us in Sail Banda as it will give you the opportunity to visit a wonderful and very beautiful part of our country that is often not seen by visitors to Indonesia.

Sail Banda 2010 is jointly organized by the Ministry of Marine and Fishery Affairs, Provincial Government Administration of Mollucas, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Sail Indonesia and the Navy Force of Indonesia, supported by the the Directorate General of Immigration and other government institutions. Sail Banda is the largest marine event of the year 2010 and offers tourism, strategic business and opportunities for various products and services.

The Banda Islands are in fact the fabled Spice Islands and lie in the modern day province of Maluku in eastern Indonesia.
They are 200 kilometers southeast from the nearest major port town of Ambon, and are made up of 9 islands - Run and Ai to the west, Manukang to the northwest, Pisang to the east, Hatta and Sekaru to the southeast, Banda Besar to the south, and the main central island of Banda Neira and its close neighbour, the volcanic island of Gunung Api - together with 2 rock islets - Batu Kapal to the east northeast and Keraka at the Banda Neira strait entrance.

Prior to 1500 no Europeans had ever landed on the shores of Maluku, but for 3000 years there had always been Asian traders seeking the the most valuable commodities including Nutmeg Mace and Cloves that grew nowhere else in the world. Fabulous fortunes were made as these spices were literally worth their weight in gold.

The main theme for Sail Banda is "Small Islands for Our Future" and the formal part of this event includes;

1, A Conference and Seminar on Small Islands, the main topic will be "Small Islands For Our Future"
2, A Cooperation Conference Indonesia-Australia strengthening Bilateral Cooperation for Social and Economic Benefit.
3, Seminar on "Sago and Spice For Food Safety" to be held by the Committee of Sail Banda 2010 with the help from PEMDA Maluku.
4, Environmental Education, Awareness, Protection and Rehabilitation Seminars.
5, Naval Port Visits involving the Navies of Indonesia, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Singapore.
6, To increase the understanding and co-operation between the Governments of Indonesia and Australia.
7, To encourage the communication and understanding between the peoples of Indonesia and Australia at a community level.
The Tourism and Sports program of Sail Banda includes the following events;
1, The Sail Indonesia Yacht Rally and Race that leaves from Darwin to Banda on July 24.
2, Sail Banda Game Fishing Games and Tournament, this tournament is a team fishing competition.
3, Sail Banda International Diving Competition, this tournament will be open to divers from Indonesia and countries all over the world. The purpose of this Tournament is to showcase the seas around Banda Islands as one of the cleanest and most beautiful dive locations in the world. This event will be supported by the Indonesian National Diving Association PB POSSI (Pengurus Besar Persatuan Olahraga Selam Seluruh Indonesia) and Cimas from France.
4, Ambon Jazz Festival to be held in Ambon while you are there, with the best Jazz musicians in attendance.

5, During each stopover there will be a number of Expos, Cultural Shows, Food Festivals and sightseeing tours provided where you will be able to experience the local foods, cultures and lifestyles far away from the well worn tourist destinations.

The Yacht Rally will have three stages, the first leg is from Darwin to Banda, the second leg will be from Banda to Ambon and the third will be on to Wakatobi. After the completion of the festivities in Wakatobi you are then able to sail to the south and join with the Sail Indonesia program which will take you through to the island of Bintan or Batam just south of Singapore.
