Sail Indonesia 2008 Eastern Passage Schedule of Events |
Welcome to our new route of the Eastern Passage Rally departing from Darwin on July 5, you will be able to explore the legendary areas of Maluku Province of Indonesia, which was for almost 400 years the home of the legendary spice trade. Your first port in Indonesia will be Saumlaki and on then on to Tual, Banda and on to Ambon, then to Ternate and Manado in North Sulawesi. The rally will then continue southwards along the western coast of Sulawesi where you can see the traditional wooden boats building and also the Sandeq Boat in Mamuju.
The Eastern Passage Rally will join the Western Passage rally in Makassar and then will follow the same route after then, if you plan going to see the Orang Utang rehabilitation facility at Kumai, we will be able help to arrange the visit to Kumai either from Makassar or Bali. |
There is no additional costs for these events through Indonesia however any port charges, additional tours, accommodation and transfers will be at your own expense.
As you can see there will not be enough time for you to participate in all these events, if you wish, after you complete Indonesian Customs and Immigration formalities in Saumlaki you can then cruise through Indonesia following the ports listed on your CAITand join the events that suit your schedule.
All Sail Indonesia participants are invited to join us at any of these venues along the route, as some of these events will have limited vacancies in some cases you will need to make a reservation.

SAUMLAKI July 8 - 12
The anchorage be in the front of Saumlaki harbor with a dingy dock close by. Customs and Immigration staff will come to Saumlaki from Tual as Customs are not normally based in Saumlaki.
The local govbernment have planned a Welcome Ceremony and Dinner at the new Hotel Galaxy
There will be tours to,
Tumbur where you will see the local woodcarving artisans at work.
Sangliat Dol Village, a unique tradtional village as well as Religious and other local attractions.

TUAL July 16 - 19
Tual has made all preparations and now ready to accept the rally.The anchorage will be at Debut and the coordinates of the anchorage will be inform to you soon, it is a secure bay and there are three islands in front of the bay.
A tour has been arranged to the traditional fishing village of Warfut, the participants will be taken there using a local traditional wooden boat provided by the local government as there is no road to this village. Warfut is a remote village, the participants will be able to enjoy the cruising into the bay, it will take about one hour and will then enter a passage to the village with mangrove bed as thick as 300 meters with beautiful scenery. Lunch will be served in the village by the villagers.
Following this the participants will be taken to Evu to visit the spring and participants will be able enjoy to swim in the pool of natural spring water. There will also be a cultural carnival where the participants are not only invited to watch but to join in.
A shuttle bus will be provided by the local government to the town which around 10 km from the anchorage for shopping to the market and banking. Unfortunately no internet service is available in Tual but diesel will be available.
A church ceremony will be held on the last day for the blessing of the yachts on their following journey to Banda island.

BANDA July 22 - 25
Banda is a beautiful island, here the participants will have a peaceful break at Neira island at the foot of a smoking volcano island.
Banda is a very historic place and was the centre of the nutmeg trade for hundreds of years, it is a small, serene island and it only takes three hours to go around it.
There is still a well preserved Dutch built fort and an old church as well as many historical building, the island is interesting, climbing one hundred steps will take you the upper village and here there is a sacred well which is believed will make you forever young.
There is a traditional market where you can buy fresh fish and vegetables, there are also some small shops but the items sold are very limited
The first vice president of Indonesia Hatta was exiled here and the well preserved house is still there.
You can also sail to Lonthor island or going there by using public boats only 20 minute away from the anchorage.
There is no diesel available in Banda and no and banks so be prepared and the good news is that there is no transportation in Banda, just walk around

SAPARUA July 27 - 30
Saparua was a very important post in the Dutch colonial era and in Saparua Bay they built Fort Duurstede in 1676 to protect their interests in the spice production in the area. Participants will be served lunch in Fort 'Duurstede with a cultural display and served traditional dishes. Saparua is a very small place with no services other than the most basic available.
As usual in these out of the way spots, westerners can walk the beaches here in solitude and not get accosted by locals trying to sell trinkets.
The Dutch language is still spoken in Saparua. and the anchorage is in a well protected bay with mirror like conditions. |
AMBON July 31 - August 3
The anchorage area will be at Amahusu Village which was used the anchorage for previous Darwin to Ambon Race, which ran for over 20 years before it was stopped in 1999 because of civil unrest in Ambon and the suurounding islands. Ambon has now returned to it's former peaceful state.
The activities in Ambon will be cultural performance and tours will be exihibit and conducted by the local government to the historical sites and attractive places.
The Gala Dinner will be hosted by the Mayor of Ambon City in his place and would be a great gathering for all participants.
Security will be arranged by the local Government specially in coordination with the event and all activities planned.

TERNATE August 6 - 9
Ternate and it's companion Tidore around 1 kilometer away are are two companion conical volcanos over 5000 feet high and are one of the more spectacular views in all of Indonesia.
As in all other places in Ternate there will also be a cultural performance and gala dinner hosted by the local Government.
Outings and tours will also be arranged by the people of destinations and local government as well.
Ternate and the islands close by are the origional source of the clove tree over which the Dutch East India Company enforced a monopoly beginning in the year of 1522 and for the following 350 years.
The old ruined Portugese fort, Fort Orangie built in the year of 1607 is a nice visit in the area.
The anchorage area will be decided soon after confirmation from the local government.

MANADO August 15 - 22
In this year of 2008 a big event from the Ministry of Youth and Sport will be held in Manado at the same time as the participants arrival. The anchorage will be at Bitung in the Lembeh Strait, a nice and safe bay.
Manado is a large city of mainly Christian religion which is a result of hundreds of years of Poruguese and Dutch domination
While you are in Manado you can also visit the Bunaken, one of the heavenly place for divers,with visibilty of 25-30 meters, divers from all levels of experience have nothing but praise for their underwater experience in the waters surrounding the small islands in Madao Bay.
The tours and outings will be excercised by the local tourism authorities to interesting places such as the active volcano Mt Lokon on the way to the highland town of Tomohon where there are beautiful gardens surroundedby ground that actually smokes between two volcanos.

MAMUJU September 5 - 10
In Mamuju all participants can enjoy beautiful scenaries and there will be tours and outing to those places arrange by the local tourism office.
The anchorage will be inform soon for a better services and conditions.
Here do not miss the Sandeq – the well known Maskassan Traditional Trimaran wooden yachts that are only used for racing, the boat can speed up to 20 knots in good winds.
You can visit the area of Mamasa, this area is a highland spot and famous for its Coffee plantaions and enjoy the natural fresh air and beautiful scenary on the higher ground.
Gala dinner and traditional performance will also be executed and performed, hosted by the local Government of Mamuju Regecny.

PARE PARE September 14 - 17
This city is familiar and well-known for the cruiser to visit, the anchorage is not yet fixed but we will inform you soon for conveniences of all participants.
From Pare Pare you can visit the famous Tana Toraja which is just around 3 hours drive by bus, participants are recommended to stay overnight to explore the exotic Tana Toraja where the only place on earth that the dead people are not buried in the ground but in the walls of a stone cave.
In ancient times, the dead are put in a high stone cave known as the famous Hanging Grave.
Traditional
dances and other cultural exhibition will be hosted by the local government and the Gala Dinner as well for all Participants.

MAKASSAR September 21 - 25
In Makassar the Eastern Passage Rally will meet up with the Western Passage Rally visiting Makassar.
The anchorage will be in front of the city itself a good a nd safe anchorage.
Makassar is an interesting city, and Old Forteese just a minute from your anchorage and Sombaopu street is just a block away. The Sombaopu street is well known for touist for hunting traditional gifts with a good price.
Ease your life and and cold beer can be easily bought at Kioa Semarang in front of the anchorage and Dinner is be great with ocean view from the second floor, this place is famous among tourists.
If you are interested of the traditional boat of Bugeese tribe – the Pinisiq, please explore Bulukumba, the village is well known as a Traditional Wooden Boat Builder in Indonesia and internationally.
Many of Pinisi Boats now are used for Chartered Boat to explore the country. This village can be reached in 2 hours drive from Makassar to the south east region.

KUMAI October 1 - 5
Kumai River The world famous attraction here is is the facilty where Orangutangs are reintroduced into the wild. Rally participants in past years have described their visit here as one of the highlights of their stay in Indonesia. Tours should be to be arranged in advance and can be booked direct with him, also we will be able help to arrangeand book your visit to Kumai from either from Makassar or Bali. |
